Since you are deferring Medicare Part B to a later date you need to be considerate of the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment period. You will want the option of Medicare Supplement insurance coverage when you are finally ready to begin with Medicare. Therefore, you should not enroll into Medicare Part B while you have outside coverage with another health insurance plan (from an employer). The reason being is that you will have a once in a lifetime Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment period which begins upon your Medicare Part B effective date, for 6 months. During this 6 month window, you’re given guaranteed issue (GI) rights. This means that you will not be required to answer any health related questions when you submit your Medicare Supplement enrollment form. By not adding Medicare to an outside current health insurance plan you are setting yourself up to have your once in a lifetime Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment period available when you need it.
You have a specific enrollment period for Medicare supplement insurance called Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period.
It can happen! If the Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period surpasses and you want to apply for a Supplement you can, but you will go through medical underwriting. This means that you will be required to answer the medical questions on the Medicare Supplement enrollment form, and possibly complete a telephone interview with the insurance carrier. The insurance carrier can increase your premium for being an elevated risk or even decline your application for a Supplement plan. If you have been declined for a Medicare Supplement you should have a discussion with your Essential Solutions representative about what options may be available for you.
